Stevenson murió en 2002 de un ataque cardíaco en su cama, y su cuerpo fue descubierto por la policia, tras derribar la puerta de su domicilio al ser avisados por Marco Pirroni, preocupado porque Nils no dio señales de vida durante varios días.
